Well *that* was unexpected!

This is the personal website of Glenn J. Mason , a technologist and unrepentant geek living and working in Sydney with his wife and son. He reads books, writes code, and rarely speaks about himself in the third-person…

The author

I’m in my 13th incarnation1. Somehow you’ve stumbled onto my (oft-ignored) website, and then have clicked on the “about” link to find out more about me – so thanks!! You probably won’t find much of interest here I’m afraid, but you’re welcome to have a poke around anyway. Let’s see, what can I tell you about myself?

The website

I’ve had a ‘blog for a while (check the archives), and have over the years migrated it from one platform to another: Blogspot to Drupal to Wordpress and beyond. These days, it’s a static site built by Hugo, using a hacked up version of the hello-friend-ng theme that I’ve never gotten around to forking. If you haven’t checked out Hugo, or static site generators in general (I hear Jekyll is good too) then you definitely should: setting this one up was pretty easy and is currently hosted for free on Firebase. Thanks, Googs!

The theme was initially based on one designed & developed by gethugothemes.com; check ’em out if you want to stand up something similar.

  1. Oh, you don’t reincarnate every prime-multiple of years? Awkward. ↩︎

We bought an apartment! A beautiful, quirky three-bedroom apartment on the ground-floor of The Malthouse, nestled snugly in the much-coveted locale of Summer Hill, a medium density community that is close to school, transport, markets, parks, and cycleways.

Finding time

In the blink of an eye, another weekend has come and gone. It’s a familiar feeling that many of us experience - the sensation that time is flying by, leaving us wondering where the hours and days have vanished to.

NAS to see you!
May 23, 2022

After too many years, I’m finally building myself a NAS: network-attached storage, a device for backing up files, photos, and all the data that is otherwise in the cloud. Say goodbye, FANGs, I’m going self-hosted.
