We all need heroes (from Greek ἥρως, “warrior, defender, protector”), right? Or maybe it’s just me. I know I certainly appreciate having fellow sentient creatures — real or imaginary, alive or dead — to look up to, learn from and attempt to emulate. Of course, real people are complex and complicated, and any mental representation of them we have is necessarily an abstraction. I call these abstractions “archetypes”, and I have selected a handful of whom have several admirable qualities I’d like to develop: Tony Stark R. Buckminster Fuller Bruce Lee Sherlock Holmes Jason Bourne By using this term, I’m forced to recognise that my abstractions are not perfect representations of the real people underneath. This helps to avoid any […]

R. Buckminster Fuller

R. Buckminster Fuller, “the planet’s friendly genius” was an architect and engineer who used his life as “…an experiment, to find what a single individual [could] contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity.” Reading his Critical Path whilst at University was transformative for me. He remains one of the archetypes of a human being I would like to emulate, as greatly simplified below (characteristics and capabilities), with appropriate strategies as well as measures/milestones that will let me know I’m moving in the right direction. Characteristics Compassionate humanist Writer & philosopher Ecologist & designer Capabilities Eloquence in self-expression Deep knowledge of modern economics and history Drafting/illustrating Milestones Cycle (or run) to and from work every day for a week Write […]

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a series of short stories and novels written between 1887 and 1927. In the stories, Holmes is a “consulting detective”, whose keen eye and hard logic lead to astounding deductions (or abductions). Since the original stories, he has been portrayed in a number of movies and fiction — he is often considered the “most well known detective” in the world, despite being fictional. There are a few characteristics of Sherlock Holmes which make him an interesting archetype to model oneself upon, as a means to self-improvement. In the following lists, I consider the (fictional) man, as well as some challenges and milestones I can use in order to […]
